Moscatel de Setúbal won International Contest Muscats du Monde

Muscat grapes produces amazing wines and there is an international competition called Muscat du Monde organized in Montpellier in France.

This year in competition were 210 wines from 23 different nations where this amazing grapes and nectar of gods is produced.

Portugal was represented by several wine producers and we are proud to announce that Venâncio Costa Lima won Muscat du Monde, with his Moscatel de Setúbal Reserve 2006. The best of the best born in Setúbal region, more precisely in Palmela county.

Moscatel de Setúbal Reserve 2006 was the unique portuguese wine on the Ranking Top 10.

With the Manor House in Vila Nogueira de Azeitao on the Setubal Peninsula, Jose Maria da Fonseca continued the investment to produce quality wines of worldwide renown and has made a decisive contribution to the recognition Portuguese wines now enjoy abroad.

The 700 hectares of vineyard and state-of-the-art winery – to rival the best anywhere in the world – result in wines that ally the accumulated experience of history with the most advanced winemaking technology.

Over and above all the resources used in producing its wines, it is the passionate commitment to the art of winemaking that best characterises the work of José Maria da Fonseca.

It is this passion, rousing emotions, that José Maria da Fonseca imparts to the consumer each time he drinks one of its wines.

Periquita, the most ancient table wine brand in Portugal celebrates this year 160 years of existence. Joining the traditional Periquita Red,Moscato, the White, Rose and the Reserva, Jose Maria da Fonseca recently launched a new member: the Periquita Superior, at the top of the family range.

Tour Schedule:

Everyday from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.

From Monday to Sunday. Open on Bank Holiday.

Guided tour w/ 2 wine tasting = 3€ per person

The tour starts in the Museum Room with a brief summary of the company’s history.

Then, after enjoying a walk through the lovely gardens, visitors have the opportunity of visiting three cellars.

The first is called Adega da Mata, where the famous Periquita matures in oak casks.

We then proceed to the Teares Novos Cellar, venue for the sumptuous annual assembly of the Periquita Brotherhood, and finally we come to the Teares Velhos Cellar, where the oldest Setubal muscatels slumber in silence.

The tour ends with a wine tasting.

Portugal is one of the most renowned producers of wine in the world, the country has a long tradition in winemaking, in fact, the history producing wine in this country comes from earlier than the foundation of its Nationality.

The well-known Portuguese wines include Port wine, Madeira wine, red wines, white wines, “vinho verde” and, of course, the Moscatel wines, of a topaz with red undertones colour.

This large area of Setubal, influenced by the proximity of the sea, soil poverty and by low productions is the cradle of Moscatel.

The Moscatel wine obtained from the Setubal peninsular region is constituted by the liqueurs caste or grape variety.

Pressed and wine brandy added then fermented with the skins over winter.

Then aged 8 years on 200 litre barrels before bottled and shipped for sipping.

When you plan your trip to Setubal you must definitely try it!

The taste is sweet and bitter at first, clear taste of figs and raisins with nuts and sunlight!

Together with a hint of tannins on the mid palate.

Back end is sugar and plum marmalade and a little pepper feel and a dry feeling to balance all the sweet.

Tip: Try it with a chocolate dessert.

Gourmet cheese tasting – Azeitão cheese

One of the many delicacies you can taste in the Setubal region is the “Queijo de Azeitao” or Azeitao’s cheese.

It was named after the village where it was born and it is said that only experienced artisans have the know-how to produce this gourmet favorite.

Made for generations at the foot of the Arrabida Hills, the Azeitao’s Cheese is produced from the raw sheep’s milk, the producers only add thistle and salt.

The cheese is coagulated with cardoon thistle instead of traditional animal rennet and it has a buttery texture.

The cure has the duration of 20 days at least. During this time every day cheeses are turned, cleaned and washed, every time it’s needed, to keep the crust clean and smooth.

The pastures where the sheep of Azeitao graze are lush and covered in herbaceous scrub, giving the milk its characteristically rich and unique flavor.

The end product is a thick, smooth, and soft cheese with a strong, earthy aroma.

When left at room temperature, the cheese becomes almost a melt yellow cream and it is eaten by using a spoon to take it out and spread it on bread or crackers.

It weights about 100 gr. or 200 gr. a piece (approximately 8 ounces). Molded in cloth, Queijo de Azeitao has a rustic appearance that adds to its romance and tradition. All the cheese have a sequential number and an origin certificate.

This cheese and a bottle of Moscatel of Setubal make an outstanding and distinct souvenir.
