Alcochete

Alcochete is a Portuguese town with a population of 16,194 habitants, built-in the district of Setúbal.

In the middle of Tejo Estuary has unique access roads connecting the Portuguese capital (Lisbon) through the Bridge Vasco da Gama. (The Vasco da Gama Bridge is 9th biggest bridge worldwide and the first in Europe, with a total length of 17,3 km, ten made on the waters of the Tejo Estuary).

This city has road links to the A1 (Lisbon-Porto), IC 32 ( Alcochete / Palmela) and connection to the A2 (Lisbon / Algarve).

Grandola

Grandola

Grandola is a typical small Alentejan town, south on the Setubal district.

A quiet place to enjoy some days or relaxation, anytime of the year.

Here hospitality, warmth, proximity and affability represent a form of life and an attitude which differentiates the place within an open and pluralistic space.

It is the revolution against the longstanding fascist dictatorship, which took place in 1974, which really put this town on the map. ‘Grândola, vila Morena‘ is a folk ballad ostensibly about this town, penned by Zéca Afonso in the 60s as a tribute to the camaraderie and socialist conscience of the hard labouring peasants of the Portuguese agrarian heartland that is the Alentejo.

What to see and do in Grandola:

  • Nature: Nearby nature reserves offer various days out in the open air. Around the Sado estuary reside many species of birds for those of you who are a birdwatching fan.
  • Beaches: Grandola has 45km of white stunning sandy beaches from Troia to Melides like:  Aberta Nova, Galé, Pego, Carvalhal, Comporta, Praia Atlântica (Soltroia), Melides, Tróia-Galé, Tróia – Bico das Lulas and Tróia Mar.
  • Desert Beaches: Next to the small village of Melides there are several desert beaches which makes it the ideal place to go to the beach if you’re one of those people who prefer almost desert beaches, having nevertheless all the small joys of life-like having a cold beer at the bars while watching sunset.
  • Melides Lagoon: Nearby Lagoa de Melides is a very well-known beautiful beach where the sea connects to the lagoon trough a small canal. A wonderful and peaceful place to soak up the sun especially if you have kids.
  • Nautic Sports: There are many water sports you can enjoy on the beaches near Grandola: Swimming, Canoeing, Windsurf, Underwater Hunting, Scuba Diving and aquatic Ski.
  • Gastronomy: Grandola is known amongst the tourists and even amongst the Portuguese for its offer of wonderful food. There are many restaurants available from typical Portuguese food to gourmet dishes.
  • Horseback riding: There are several riding centres in Grandola where you can enjoy the pleasure of riding.
  • Grandola Hill: With an altitude of 350 metres, the Grandola Hill is a place of contrast with the scenario of flat land in Alentejo. The Hill is full of cork trees, Portuguese oaks, pear trees, rose bushes and several birds and animals like otters.
  • Walking tours: There are several walking tours available, a nice way of knowing Grandola and the surroundings, passing trough many local attractions.
  • Hunting: There are several touristic places to hunt in Grandola. Species to hunt :  rabbit, partridge, turtle-dove, quail, wild pigeon, woodcock, duck and lapping. Hunting here is a rendezvous with nature, a chance to observe species from close quarters to room close to nature and sample the rich local gastronomy while getting to know the culture of the region.
  • Fishing: Fishing has been a long tradition and a sport. Names and stories evoke prowess past and present. Fishing lines are thrown from beaches and riverbanks, providing unequalled conditions for the catching of base and sea bream. In the estuaries where the river meets the sea, red mullet, sole and cuttlefish abound.

Seixal presents a riverside zone with cultural, economical and social potentialities for tourism.

History : You can visit Quinta da Fidalga . Founded on XV century had agricultural and recreational functions. This space is mostly connected to Vasco da Gama brother (Paulo da Gama), that stayed in this farm to follow  the construction of caravels which Vasco da Gama used to discover the Maritime Route to India.

Church : Wonderful historic churches from XV century till XIX century construction.

Gastronomy : the local cuisine was historically dependent on agriculture, fisheries and livestock. by creating specific feeding habits that have lasted to this day. Amazing local plates : “Feijoada de Choco”, “Caldeirada”, “Massa de Peixe”, “Enguias Fritas” and “Ensopado de Enguias” are traditional one. For dessert we suggest you “Pastelinhos de Santa Marta”.

Crafts: known as folk art is part of the local culture and is an identification of local people. Strong local traditions with excellent artifices, are characterized by their ability to build ships in miniature. They made amazing local products like tiles, ceramics, pottery, basketry, in wood, textiles, decorative arts and much more.

Chispalhada by Montijo

Chispalhada by Montijo

Montijo is located in the north of Portugal Dream Coast, surrounded by the green of the rural landscape and by the blue of Tejo River.

Montijo has traditions on agriculture and fish from  the river.

Preparation: After washing and scraping the meat, put it in a pot, adding water and salt accordingly, and boil. Once the meat is cooked, remove from pot and set it aside. Cook the cabbage, carrots and potatoes cut into quarters in the meat broth. At the same time, cook the sausage separately.

You can use the broth to cook noodles. Serve on a platter with the potatoes, cabbage, carrots and beans in the centre and around the meat.

Ingredients: 7,5 Dl kidney beans soaked 100 g of lard / bacon 1,5 Kg dewlap, sparks, tail and pig’s ear 1 spicy sausage 500 grs cabbage 200 grs carrots 350 grs potatoes Salt and Water.  

Now, you can cook Chispalhada by Montijo.
