Pedra da Anixa (Anixa rock)

Pedra da Anixa (Anixa rock)

Some 250 metres off the beautiful Portinho da Arrabida beach is a 40 metre long rocky island known as Pedra da Anixa, which is part of the Arrabida natural reserve in Setubal.

Important for its sub-aquatic vegetation and even more so for its extremely varied marine life; to date more than 70 species have been recorded as well as scores of marine invertebrates.

Such great biological diversity is attributable to the rich composition of its rocky depths, surrounded by a relatively barren sandy sea-bed.

The complex structure of its underwater cracks, cavities and platforms, provide shelter and serve as an ideal breeding ground.

Pedra da Anixa is a very popular place amongst diving enthusiasts.

Santa Margarida Cave

Santa Margarida Cave

Numerous sandy caves lie at the foot of the Arrabida Hills limestone cliffs.

The Serra (mountain) abounds with caves and grottoes.

The best known is Lapa de Santa Margarida, of which Hans Christian Andersen wrote, “It is a veritable church hewn out of the living rock, with a fantastic vault, organ pipes, columns, and altars.

Located about 500 metres west of the Portinho da Arrabida beach in Setubal, it has two entrances, one from sea and the other from land.

The earliest evidence of man’s presence in the region, in the Lower Palaeolithic age, was found here.

Apart from the primitive church there are stalactites and stalagmites.

Enter the cave stepping down about 20 steps.

Visit the cave, the little church in front, the ramifications of the cave at right/front, the holes at left that permits passage to the sea, explore the space behind the church, watch the fossils on the walls… take your time exploring this huge cave.
