Port and Fishermen of Setubal

Port and Fishermen of Setubal

One of the main attractions of Setubal is the port.

Not because of the souvenir shops or beach side strolls or even cafe to chat, because there are not any, but because of being Setubal a city of fishermen it is here that you can breathe and feel the true nature of the region.

It is very real and it shows the connection to the sea of all the region of Setubal.

Go up early and walk to the port, it can be fascinating to watch the harbor as the brightly painted boats arrive in the morning loaded with fish and as fishermen mend their nets and the brisk auctions  take place.

There are fishermen covered in various fish guts, others scrubbing blood off their boats, transporters carrying the sales, and women preparing food for the meals.

Very near from the port at the Praça do Bocage stays the Igreja de São Julião or St. Julian’s Church, regarded as the main church of the region. Built during the second half of the thirteenth century, this ambitious project was spearheaded by the fishermen of Setubal.
