Giacometti Labour Museum

Giacometti Labour Museum

This wonderful and unique museum in Portugal (in Portuguese named Museu do Trabalho) is set in a former Sardine Factory.

Setubal once had many of these but they have all closed sown, though there are still one or two chimneys on the horizon.

The Sardine story is only one of the industries covered in this museum, that also covers past rural industries.

Of course the Sardine industry was linked to the olive oil and salt extraction industries and these are also covered.

One of the highlights of the museum is a full grocery store (Mercearia) donated to the museum by Michel Giacometti.

The store formally occupied a site in the famous Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, and has been dismantled, transported and carefully reproduced within the museum, thereby linking the industries of Portugal to its commerce.

This museum also has various temporary exhibitions worth to see if you’re on a visit to Setubal and often has a lace maker at work, representing cottage or household industries.

There is an active education and community outreach programme.

This innovative museum opened its doors for the first time in 1987 and ever since, it has won several prizes.
