Setúbal Museum

Setúbal Museum

In 1959, when the Hospital in the Convent of Jesus in Setúbal moved premises, the building became available.

Thus, in 1960, some of its rooms were taken over for a series of exhibitions commemorating the 100th anniversary of Setúbal being granted City Status.

This was subsequently followed by the conversation of the whole building into the Museum of Setúbal, on the initiative of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Setúbal and its the support of Setúbal Municipal Council and Civil Governor.

The official opening of the Museum took place on February 5, 1961.

The Museum contains collections related to art, history, archaeology and coins.

The art section is particularly outstanding, especially the 16th century paintings, sacred sculpture, gold and silver pieces, tiles and other forms of decorative art. Contemporary art is also well represented due to regular new acquisitions.

Guided tours of collections, urban heritage and exhibitions, teaching packs; workshops; conferences, among other activities, designed for all ages but particularly for school groups.

Admission is free and besides its own Documentation Centre, the Museum is also responsible for the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Setúbal archives and three private, ancient libraries.

Visiting hours : Tuesdays to Saturdays, 9am/12am and 1.30pm/5:30pm . Closed to the public on Sundays, Mondays and public Holidays.
