The Romans named it Promontorium Barbaricum, alluding to its dangerous location, and a lighthouse warns sailors of the treacherous rocks below. Tourists are drawn here due to breathtaking views of its cliffs facing the Atlantic Ocean and its mystical surroundings.
Built extremely close to the edge of the tall cliffs stands the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Cabo (Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Cape), a late 17th-century church and on either side of the church a long line of pilgrims’ lodgings facing inwards form an open courtyard. Close to this location, next to the Lagosteiros beach, fossilised dinosaur footprints and tracs of fossilised dinossaur tail were discovered.
These site become a popular place of pilgrimage in the 13th-century when a local man had a vision of the Madonna rising from the sea on a mule. Legend has it that the tracks of the mule can be seen embedded in the rocks.
